This must be the place
Long and wild beach in the municipality of Gonnesa, ideal for avoiding the excessive crowds of certain beaches. Exceptional panorama up to Pan di Zucchero and Capo Pecora. A bit of seaweed, expensive parking, annoying midges when you sunbathe.
Enchanting place, breathtaking landscape, crystal clear sea, golden and soft sand.
Describing the marine area of the Porto Paglia tuna fishery is not only easy but also extremely pleasant, in fact the memories of that visit will always remain vivid in our hearts.
You reach the tuna fishery after traveling along the provincial road. 108 and taking the detour onto the municipal road to Porto Paglia.
Just looking around while walking the streets that lead to this magical place leaves us fascinated.
In fact, the encounter with the singular and incredible shapes that the cork oaks bent by the wind have assumed is something priceless and unique.
At the end of the municipal road, you arrive at a large dirt car park which gives access to the southern part of Gonnesa beach from where you can begin to admire the structures connected to the ancient tuna fishery.
Currently, all the visible structures are occupied by a tourist residential complex, but it is clear that those ancient houses that were once the accommodation of the crew who worked in the tuna fishery and the small church of S. Pietro, are full of maritime stories, tragedies and of hopes.
After a short walk downhill on a staircase in red and green trachyte worn by the sea which in its final part runs alongside other houses, you arrive at the factories of the former 16th century tuna fishery, whose rooms have been transformed into accommodation.
The building is imposing and directly overlooks the beach, a huge and splendid portico (not accessible) supports part of the structure, acts as a treasure chest for an ancient anchor and frames a beautiful garden.
With your back to the tuna fishery you look towards the sea; looking towards the cliff on the left you cannot help but notice a small building "that seems to be a church" built directly on the rocks, which has no windows and only an access door and is almost surrounded by the sea and challenges the waves with every storm.
This first stretch of sea can sometimes be partly covered in seagrass, but by taking a few steps towards the right side of the beach "which is still almost 4km long" you can easily enjoy a splendid sea and the view of enormous sand dunes covered by Mediterranean scrub.
Note: the entire Gonnesa beach is well exposed to western winds; therefore in the presence of sustained wind coming from those quadrants, the sea can quickly become dangerous with large waves and strong currents.
However, it is definitely a place to visit.
The sand is beautiful, uncomfortable to go down to the beach especially if you have children! We went down one day where it was full of algae and the water wasn't very clear 😰 Too bad!!
Beautiful beach. We didn't stop there, where most of the tourism stops, we went beyond the equipped beach and found an enchanting cove. Just us and the sea. Once past the old fishing village, which has now become a tourist village, there are large clusters of dried seagrass, as well as qst, bays of very clear sand and a sea of a thousand shades of green.
